Swish: Everyday Mobile Payments in Sweden

NEW TO SWEDEN

1 min read

From splitting a dinner bill with friends to paying small businesses or service providers, Swish has become an essential part of daily life in Sweden.

What is Swish?

Swish is Sweden’s most widely used mobile payment app, designed to make everyday payments fast, simple, and secure. It is developed by major Swedish banks in collaboration with the Swedish banking system. It connects directly to your bank account and allows money to be transferred instantly between users.

What do people use Swish for?

Swish is used for a wide range of personal and small-scale payments, including:

  • Splitting restaurant or café bills

  • Paying friends or family

  • Paying small businesses, freelancers, or service providers

  • Buying items at markets or second-hand sales

  • Depositing money in financial accounts

How to get Swish

Before you can start using Swish, you need to meet a few requirements.

1. A Swedish bank account

Swish is connected directly to Swedish banks. You must have an active bank account with a bank that supports Swish (most major banks do). See the full list of connected banks here.

2. BankID

BankID is required to activate and approve Swish payments. It is used to verify your identity and authorize transactions securely.

3. A Swedish phone number

Your phone number is what others use to send you money, so it must be registered and linked to your Swish account.

The table below shows the list of banks connected to Bank ID and/or Swish.
